Free Chlorine Keeps Crashing? Here's What's Eating It

You ran the oxidizer baseline like I told you to. You spiked your free chlorine, walked away, and came back 24 hours later to a reading of zero. The oxidizer is gone. And now you're wondering if you dosed wrong.
You didn't. A crashing free chlorine reading is not a dosing problem. It's a message. Something in your system is eating the oxidizer, and free chlorine that drops to zero is the most useful failure signal you have. It means there's a live organic load in there consuming it. Your job is to find what.
Here's where it hides, roughly in order of how often it's the culprit.
1. Biofilm you didn't fully clear
The most common answer. If you sterilized but the free chlorine still crashes, your clean wasn't deep enough. Biofilm survived somewhere and it's steadily consuming everything you add. The fix is a proper regeneration: 5 mL/gal of bleach with a couple drops of dish soap per gallon, circulated a full 24 hours, then dump without rinsing. Then re-run the baseline. Most systems that failed the first time will hold after one deep reset.
2. The pump back plate
If you keep re-cleaning and it keeps crashing, stop cleaning the tank and open the pump. Behind the cover where the cord enters is an unvented cavity that harbors biofilm and re-seeds the system every time the pump runs. You can regenerate the reservoir all day, but if the pump is quietly re-inoculating it, the free chlorine will keep disappearing. Pull that back plate off, leave it off, and sterilize the naked pump with everything else.
3. Your water source itself
Sometimes the consumption starts before you've added anything living. High organic content or high mineral load in your source water can eat oxidizer on contact. Test it in isolation: run the baseline on your treated water with nothing else in the system. If it crashes on clean fill water alone, the problem is upstream, and you may need better filtration or reverse osmosis before the water ever reaches the cloner.
4. Your own workflow
The frustrating one. If the system holds free chlorine when it sits empty but crashes the moment you start cloning, you are re-contaminating it as you work. Unsterilized tools, hands, or cuttings introduce organic load with every insertion. This is exactly why the two-spike rule exists: dose oxidizer on fill, then re-boost after all the cuttings are placed but before additives, so you surface-sterilize everything you just touched.
The diagnostic ladder
Work it in order. Deep-clean first. Still crashing? Open the pump. Still crashing? Test the water alone. Holds empty but crashes in use? Fix your workflow and add the second spike. Somewhere on that ladder is the thing eating your oxidizer, and the free chlorine reading will tell you the moment you've fixed it, because it will finally hold.
