Low and Slow Beats Shock: The Bleach Dose Nobody Teaches

There's a reflex every grower has when a cloner looks dirty. Dump in a big slug of bleach, run it hard for twenty minutes, rinse, done. It feels thorough. It feels aggressive. It is also the wrong way to kill what's actually hurting you.

The enemy isn't loose gunk. It's biofilm: a living, glued-down colony of bacteria that builds a protective shell around itself. A twenty-minute high-dose blast barely scratches that shell. What actually dissolves biofilm is time. A lower dose of oxidizer, left in contact for hours, works its way in and takes the colony apart.

Low and slow beats shock. Here's how to run it.

The between-cycle sterilization dose

When you're cleaning an empty system between cloning runs, this is the recipe:

  • 3 to 5 mL/gal of 8.25% bleach. That works out to roughly 60 to 100 ppm free chlorine. Strong, but not the point.
  • Circulate 8 to 12 hours, overnight. The pump running all night is what does the work. The oxidizer needs those hours in contact with every surface.
  • Add 1 to 2 drops per gallon of concentrated dish soap (about 0.05 to 0.1 mL/gal). The surfactant lifts debris so the oxidizer can reach what's underneath.
  • Then dump. Do not rinse. This surprises people. Rinsing reintroduces whatever is in your tap water and wastes the residual protection. Just drain it and let it go.

Why the shock method fails

A high-dose, short-contact blast has two problems. First, it doesn't have time to penetrate biofilm, so the colony survives and re-seeds your next batch within days. Second, a big spike of oxidizer gets consumed fast by whatever organic load is present, so the concentration crashes long before the twenty minutes are up. You think you sterilized. You knocked the surface off a colony that's still alive underneath.

Long contact solves both. Even as the oxidizer gets partially consumed, there's enough of it, for long enough, to keep working on the biofilm until it lets go.

Regenerating a system that's already fouled

If a cloner has been running dirty for a while, step it up. Use 5 mL/gal of 8.25% bleach (or 8 to 10 mL/gal if you only have 5.25% household bleach), add your 2 drops per gallon of dish soap, and circulate a full 24 hours before dumping. This is the deep-clean reset for a system that's been colonized, and it's worth the extra day.

Prove it worked

Don't assume. After you dump and refill, run the oxidizer baseline: spike a small dose of free chlorine and check in 24 hours whether it holds. If it holds where it used to crash, the low-and-slow clean did its job. That's the whole philosophy in one loop. Sterility you can measure, not sterility you hope for.
