Too Much Callus, No Roots? The 48-Hour Reset

You take a cutting and check the base a week later, expecting roots. Instead you find a fat white knob of tissue and nothing growing out of it. The cutting looks alive and even healthy, but it's stalled. No roots, just knob.
That's over-callus, and it's one of the most fixable problems in cloning once you understand what caused it.
What callus actually is
When you cut a stem, the plant's first response is to seal and heal the wound by producing callus, a mass of unspecialized cells. That's normal and necessary. Callus is supposed to be the launch pad. Roots emerge from it.
The trouble starts when the plant keeps pouring energy into making more callus instead of switching over to producing roots. You get a bigger and bigger knob and no root initiation. The launch pad grows, but nothing ever launches.
Why it happens: too much hormone
The usual cause is rooting hormone. Auxin, the hormone that drives root development, is a dose-with-diminishing-returns situation. The right amount pushes the cutting from callus into roots. Too much locks it in callus-production mode and actually suppresses the transition to roots. So the grower who thinks "more hormone equals more roots" and doubles the dose often gets the opposite: a beautiful useless knob.
The 48-hour reset
Here's the fix, and it's refreshingly simple. You need to pull the hormone out of the equation and let the cutting switch modes.
- Change the water. Fresh, clean, treated cloning water.
- Add your oxidizer to keep it sterile through the reset.
- Add a mineral nutrient at cloning strength, but NO hormone. This is the key move. Nutrient feeds the transition to roots; the absence of hormone lets the callus stop growing and start rooting.
- Wait. Prolific roots should initiate within about 24 to 48 hours, sometimes up to 72 on a stubborn batch.
That's it. Same cuttings, same system, minus the hormone. The knob you already grew becomes the launch pad it was meant to be, and roots push out of it once the hormone signal that was holding them back is gone.
The lesson that outlasts this fix
The reason this works points at a bigger principle worth keeping. In cloning, more inputs are not better inputs. Hormone, nutrient strength, oxidizer, all of it has a sweet spot, and blowing past the sweet spot usually causes the exact failure you were trying to prevent. When something stalls, the first question isn't "what should I add?" It's "what did I overdo?" More often than not, backing off is the fix.
